Bring Your BMW to our experts in Marlborough to replace the ignition module

October 25, 2021

Wear and tear on your  BMW  will eventually cause parts of its sophisticated intricate systems to fail. One of the possible problems BMW owners encounter is  ignition module failure . The  ignition module , also sometimes called the ignition control module, is responsible for regulating and managing the creation of sparks in a car’s  engine .

Essentially, if this little piece of equipment isn’t working, your car is in trouble. This is because vehicles need to maintain a careful balance to operate at peak efficiency. If left unfixed, one part breaking down can lead to a landslide of other problems that will only grow. Let’s take a closer look at the ignition module.

Symptoms of Ignition Module Failure

There are a few signs you can look out for that will let you know how your ignition module, and your engine in general, are doing. These all have varying degrees of severity, and you may still be able to drive your car with some of these problems. However, as with most things, catching problems early is the best way to make sure they don’t spiral into an issue that will both be expensive and incredibly time-consuming to repair.

If you notice any of these symptoms, no matter how insignificant you may think they are, you should consider  scheduling an appointment with your local trusted mechanic  so they can inspect and diagnose your BMW’s problems and consult you on your chosen method of proceeding with repairs.

  • Overheating:  This is one of the most common indications of ignition module failure. It can lead to more severe issues if left unchecked. You might notice that your car is stalling out often or that the  temperature gauge  on your BMW’s  dashboard  is reading much higher than normal.
  • In extreme cases, you might even notice your  engine smoking . If this happens, pull off to the side of the road and let your engine cool off. Do not open your hood, as the steam and engine parts will be extremely hot.  Call for a tow .
  • Failure to start:  This is a pretty obvious sign that something’s wrong. If you cannot get your car to start when you turn the key in the ignition or the car suddenly stops working while you’re driving down the road, that’s a sign that serious problems are going on under the hood.
  • Reduced fuel efficiency:  When pretty much anything goes wrong with a vehicle, you can expect fuel efficiency to suffer. In this case, because the car might be overheating, it will have to work even harder to produce the same results that you’re used to getting.
  • Power loss:  BMWs are designed to accelerate quickly and get up to speed on demand. If yours is starting to be slow to respond, then it’s likely that there’s something wrong, whether it’s the ignition module or something else. A  mechanic  who specializes in the BMW brand will diagnose this for you.
  • Gasoline odors:  This is one of the side effects of an overheating engine, but it can be caused by a lot of other things too. Smelling gasoline is never a good thing, so if you notice it, you should  get your vehicle checked  out as soon as you can.

How to Get the Ignition Module Replaced

Unless you are experienced in automotive repair, it’s not a good idea to attempt to replace an ignition module (or do any other engine work) on your own. Since the engine is such an important part of your car, any mistakes you might make can be very costly and time-consuming to repair. That’s why it’s best to leave complicated repairs to  professionally-trained auto repair technicians .
